2020 in Review: Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church's Share the Plate Committee

I am a member of Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, where I serve on the Share the Plate Committee. Instead of going directly to the church, the offertory each week is donated to non-profits in our community.

Since we started the committee in June 2020, the congregation has donated more than $7,000! I'm incredibly proud of this, especially given that services and giving have been conducted online for the past six months because of the pandemic. It really speaks to the dedication of our membership and our desire to create positive change at this most upsetting of times.

After polling church membership on donation priorities, the committee selected organizations based on alignment with the Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalist congregations. Here are the groups we donated to in 2020:

Dignity & Power Now

Camp de Benneville Pines Jericho Road Pasadena

California Latinas for Reproductive Justice League of Women Voters California Education Fund Pasadena Educational Foundation

Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley The Altadena Community Garden

L.A. United Methodist Urban Foundation, Kid City Hope Place L.A. Regional Food Bank

Making Housing & Community Happen

If you work with a San Gabriel Valley/L.A. 501(c)(3) non-profit that is interested in applying for our Share the Plate funds, please fill out this Google form.

And if you have questions about what, exactly, UU churches are all about, I highly recommend you watch this entertaining and yet entirely accurate clip from "The Simpsons":
